Step 1 - Measure & Calculate
I measured my IKEA Poang chair to determine the width of a simple wooden racing rig. I wanted the seat nice and snug, but not impossible to get in and out. I then sat in the chair and held the plank where I thought it should sit, put the pedals where they were comfortable, then got measurements for everything.
Step 2 - Cut and Prepare
The next step was to cut everything to size, drill the pocket screw holes, thumb screw holes and do some basic sanding.
I also cut a half lap joint in the bottom of the vertical posts (I need a bit of practice at these) hoping that this would stop them from moving backwards and forwards when the racing gets a little heated. They didn’t quite work the way I wanted to so I may need to mirror them on the bottom post so that they join properly, rather than just sit on the outside.
Finally some insert nuts were installed in the bottoms and tops of the posts ready for the hand bolts.
Step 3 - Assembly
Once everything was cut, sanded and prepared, the final part was to screw everything together, making sure that the bottom frame was square.

As a result of building this wooden racing rig and using the steering wheel instead of a controller, I was able to earn Gold in all normal licenses on Gran Turismo 7. (Only 2.4% of players have earned this trophy) and am working my way towards more Gold in more areas.
